Course Unit Description

This module handles concepts under complex numbers such as real and imaginary parts of complex numbers, properties of imaginary parts’ relationship between complex numbers and real numbers and other sets of numbers, operations with complex numbers, addition and subtraction of complex numbers, properties of arithmetic operations, multiplication and division of complex numbers, modulus and argument of complex numbers. Vectors in 2 dimensions:  definition, I and j notation, addition and subtraction, cumulative, distributive, associative laws of vector addition scalar multiplication, magnitude of a vector, unit vectors. Vectors in 3 dimensions: i, j and k notation, magnitude of a vector in 3 dimensions, cumulative, distributive and associative, distributive and associative laws of addition of vectors, unit vectors in 3 dimensions, and also cross product.

Course Objectives
By the end of the course, the student teacher should be able to:

  • Use mathematics in everyday life problem-solving situations
  • Extend his/her knowledge of real number system to include imaginary numbers
  • Appreciate the aesthetic values of mathematics
