Course Unit Description


This course deals with the contribution of philosophy to curriculum, moral and ethical issues with emphasis to Ugandan context. It discuses major concepts of Philosophical thoughts. The problem of the nature of Reality (Metaphysics), Man, Knowledge (epistemology) and Values (axiology); Central features of key philosophers and their relations to practices in education: Plato, Aristotle, Locke, Herbert Spencer, Rousseau, Dewy, Mahatma, Ghandi, Satre & Nyerere; The African traditional Approach to philosophy and Education, as well as the contemporary Philosophies of Education.
 

Course objectives 

This course unit is meant to lead students to:

  • Use philosophical thoughts pattern for isolating various educational and professional challenges that intrigue educationists.
  • Identify philosophical problems in Education and try to solve them
  • Employ tools of logic for improving capacity to think
  • State the nature and purpose of philosophy in education
