Course Unit Description

This course begins with the Solar system, the Sun and its atmosphere, covering heliospheric medium, interaction of the solar wind and planetary magnetic fields. It also covers the formation and properties of the planetary atmospheres. Finally, the course covers in detail the Earth’s atmosphere and magnetosphere, and how these interact with the Sun.

Course objectives
The objectives of the course are to:

  • Discuss the Solar System and theories for its formation
  • Describe the Planetary atmospheres
  • Describe the Solar surface and atmosphere
  • Describe the heliosphere and the heliospheric medium.
  • Discuss the Earth’s Atmosphere and the Magnetosphere.

Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the course, the students should be able to:

  • Describe the Solar System and formation theories.
  • Explain the mechanisms of energy transport in the solar Atmospheres.
  • Describe the Planetary interiors and atmospheres.
  • Explain the Earth’s Atmosphere and the magnetosphere.
