Course Unit Description
This course provides an overview of environmental management at facilities that are subject to environmental regulations. This course further examines environmental management of atmospheric resources and energy in the context of natural resources, human health and sustainable practices. The fundamentals of driving forces that influence the production and consumption of energy, the atmosphere of air quality and global climate are presented. This course also looks at the relationship between social deprivation and resource depletion from a critical political and economic perspective.
Course objectives
This course aims at providing an introduction to environmental management and to link both environmental and management aspects to the real environment. Notably this course will integrate the management focus with the conceptual framework of both Environmental Impact Assessment and Sustainable Production System.
The course further aims at introducing students to the principles of Environmental Management and Conservation. Emphasis will be directed towards alternative approaches to issues of environmental conservation and development particularly economic development strategies and towards integration of environmental issues into development planning in Uganda in particular and Third World countries in general.
- To foster critical thinking about how to analyze and address a range of environmental issues where there are conflicting interests, uncertain knowledge and unequal capacity of understanding and managing problems.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, students will be expected to be able to:
- Well acquainted with the current environmental management programmes in Uganda and the problems attendant to their implementation.
- Assess management systems used in conservation and protection of the environment and its resources.
- To identify the environmental media that need to be managed (Land water, biota).
- To develop awareness of ethical and moral issues involved in seeking the wise and sustainable use of resources.
