Course Unit Description

This course is a build-up of the undergraduate Classical Mechanics. Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations are reviewed, and then more complex transformations (e.g. Canonical transformations - Generating functions; Lagrange and Poisson brackets; Jacob’s identity) are introduced, and applied to continuous media and fields.

Course Objectives
The objectives of the course are to:

  • Discuss Lagrange’s equations and their application to charged particles in electromagnetic fields.
  • Describe canonical transformations considering conservation laws.
  • Explain the application of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations to continuous media/fields.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, the students should be able to:

  • Apply Lagrange’s equations to charged particles in electromagnetic fields.
  • Explain canonical transformations when considering conservation laws.
  • Describe Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations to continuous media/fields.
