Course Unit Description

Hydro-dynamics and Hydro-elasticity is a branch of fluid dynamics. Equations that arise from the description of fluid motion are born in physics, yet are interesting from a more mathematical point of view as well.  This course unit can be used to solve a very wide range of fluid-structure interaction problems involving natural vibrations and dynamic responses.

Course Objectives
The students should be able to;

  • Formulate and solve classical and non-classical problems in hydro-elastic and hydro-dynamic stability.
  • Outline the physical mechanism involved in hydro-dynamic and hydro-elastic stability in terms of energy exchanges between the flow and the elastic structure.
  • Interpret and discuss the solutions of hydrodynamic and hydro-elastic Stability problems.
  • Explain the phenomenon of hydro-dynamic coupling/interference between floating rigid bodies, formulate the relevant matrix equation.

Learning Outcome
After successful completion of the course, students are expected to have acquired:

  • Practical skills about determining the mass flow rate of petroleum through pipelines, predicting weather patterns and modelling fission weapon detonation.
  • Knowledge of calculating various properties of the fluid, such as velocity, pressure, density, and temperature, as functions of space and time in finding solutions to fluid dynamics problems.
