BLS1101 Introduction to the Study of Language
Course Unit Description
This course introduces students to basic concept and issues in language and linguistics. The basic concept of language and its nature is discussed. Linguistic phenomena of language change, language diversity and the language situation in Uganda are discussed.
Course Objectives
- Explain the concept language and its origin, characteristics
- Explain how animal communications are distinct from human language
- Justify the cause for language change
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course students will be able to:
- Explain the concept language, its characteristics and functions
- Illustrate knowledge of the difference between language and linguistics
- Evaluate the various theories of language origin
- Discuss the phenomena of Language change, language diversity, levels of language analysis, and the language situation in Uganda
