Course Unit Description

The course considers two important tools commonly used in a bid to protect the environment. These are EIA and SEA. Besides EIA, among other approaches, which, according to Partidário (n.d), have failed to efficiently respond to the new challenges of the 20th century, learners will have the ability to concentrate on unique techniques in SEA to achieve environmental soundness. This is based on the centrality of SEA in planning, for, as opposed to EIA, it halts actions at the planning stage rather than when the process is advanced and has technically been accepted to proceed, pending approval.

Course Objectives

  • Describe the various aspects of the environment which affect human well being
  • Explain impacts of development activities suggested solutions to such problems.

Expected Outcomes

  • Learners are aware of impacts of development activities within their environment and develop skills to find alternative development  scenarios
