Course Unit Description

The course introduces students to fisheries legislation and governance, with a focus on the policy and law implementation issues and challenges.  Special reference will be made to fisheries governance in Uganda.

Course objectives 
By the end of the course, the student will be:

  • able to interpret the meaning of fisheries governance as a discipline
  • equipped with the basic concepts of the fisheries act and aquaculture policy
  • equipped with knowledge of institutional setup responsible for fisheries governance 
  • able to learn about the challenges and limitations of implementing the fisheries act and policy

Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students should:

  • Explain the policy, legal and governance framework for fisheries management 
  • Implement and enforce fisheries policies and laws.
  • Suggest solutions to challenges facing implementation and enforcement of fisheries policies and laws.
