Course Unit Description

This course involves the study of measures taken to control and reduce water and soil loss with the aim of preserving and conserving it to reduced gradation. It also involves the study of the artificial ways of water application (irrigation) for purpose of agricultural production in areas where rainfall is either insufficient or poorly distributed or where there is no rain completely.

Course Objectives 

  • To explain the principles of soil and water conservation for sustainable crop production
  • To explain the different methods used to conserve soil and water on the farm
  • To describe the need for irrigation and the different irrigation technologies
  • Explain the role of the environment and its conservation

Learning Outcomes 
At the end of this course the students should be able to: 

  • Describe the effect of land degradation on economic development
  • Carry out appropriate measures to control soil erosion and conserving soil moisture
  • Harvest water for use on the farm and appreciate the value of irrigation methods
  • Use various methods of irrigation in the field and select suitable drainage methods
  • Explain and implement environmental process relating to wetlands
