Course Unit Description
This course introduces students to the basic knowledge of genetic principles that lie behind the practices of breeding programs and therefore be in position to advise and guide the farmers in aspects of livestock breeding according to the policies particular to each species
Course Objectives
- To equip students with basic knowledge of genetic principles that lie behind the practices of animal breeding programs.
- To advise and guide the farmers in aspects of livestock breeding according to the policies particular to each species.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, learners should be able to:
- Advice the farmers in selecting animals between and within breeds suitable for their needs and environmental conditions.
- Identify breeding goals and objectives and subsequently design an appropriate breeding program to maximize the production and on the other hand avoid inbreeding.
- Describe different selection methods for single and multiple traits, and their practical applications and limitations.
