Course Unit Description
Introduction to home economics, child care and development theory 1, introduction to population education and family planning, human nutrition and nutrition disorders, food processing, meal planning and Projects on home economics.
Course Objectives
- To enable the students understand and manage the home well, do proper family planning and become self-reliant.
- To enable students to know the basics of human nutrition and food science and how to feed the family well
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course the student should be able to:
- Explain the meaning home economics, appreciate the role of women in development, and identify family goals.
- Appreciate the importance of child care and development
- Explain the meaning of family planning, the advantages of rapid growing populations on provision of social services; relate family planning and responsible parenthood.
- Define nutrition, malnutrition, and balanced diet.
- Acquire practical skills in kitchen cleanliness, keep a well-planned kitchen, economically use fuel and stoves, measure and estimate weights and volumes of food ingredients, prepare meals and serve.
- Define food spoilage, state the principles of food preservation, outline the methods and identify the common foods used. Food poisoning; define, causes, types. Convenience food, its advantages and disadvantages and classification of convenience foods.
- Prepare well balanced meals for vulnerable groups, plan and prepare meals for the various age groups e.g. adolescents, adults and the elderly.
- Plan and purchase wisely, make some items like door mats, flower vases, and pillows, demonstrate some practical skills and their application in daily life.
