BLS2201 Literature for Children
Course Unit Description
This course entails an introduction to children’s literature in Africa, the various types/genres of children’s literature, fiction and non-fiction, determining the appropriate literature for children to use, and developing a reading culture especially with modern technological developments.
Course Objectives
- Provide students with the awareness of what Children’s Literature is
- Acquaint students with knowledge on the basic concepts of children's literature,
- Expose the students to the different ways of enhancing and promoting reading experiences for children
- Guide the student to decide appropriate children's literature
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students’ will:
- Have acquired knowledge of the important concepts, forms, values, evaluation principles, and criticisms of children’s literature
- Use different ways to promote good literature reading experiences for children, such as storytelling, shared reading, story webbing and mapping
- Read, present, and discuss a number of assigned pieces of children’s literature as well as famous works chosen by themselves
