Course Unit Description

This course introduces students to concepts that will enable them analyze and describe the sounds of English. It describes the individual sounds of English and the prosodic features of stress tone and intonation.

Course Objectives 

  • To acquaint learners with the speech sounds of English
  • To improve students’ knowledge of transcription of a spoken or written text
  • Describe the tone, stress, intonation and vowel length of English
  • Explore the functional varieties of English

Learning outcomes 
At the end of the course students’ will be able to: 

  • Identify, describe and produce the speech sounds of English
  • Transcribe a spoken or written text
  • Describe the tone, stress, intonation and vowel length of English
  • Describe the functional varieties of English
  • Judge the near-nativeness of speech produced by a second language learner
  • Suggest ways of improving the teaching of pronunciation to pupils in Ugandan school
