Course Unit Description

This course unit is meant to provide teacher trainees with the theoretical background and understanding of the field of curriculum at policy and practice level. It is intended to orient the prospective teachers to factors that influence curriculum design, development, implementation and innovation. Students will be provided exposure to various curriculum development models and theories to enhance their understanding. The course will be delivered using blended learning. Students will be required to interact with the online resources and course facilitator for at least 3 hours per week.

Course objectives
The general objective of this course is to enable teacher trainees to conceptualize, analyze and critique the school curriculum as well as appreciate their role in its implementation. Specific objectives include:

  • Explain the concept of curriculum and its implication to the classroom teacher.
  • Explain the components of the curriculum and show how they relate to education
  • Examine the relationship between various elements of curriculum and their application in the classroom and the school system.
  • Analyze the determinants of a curriculum and their implication to curriculum design.
  • Design a blueprint of a curriculum.
  • Identifying gaps in the existing curriculum and making recommendations for the review.

Expected learning outcomes
This course unit is expected to produce graduates who are competent enough to:

  • relate the curriculum to their activities as teachers
  • show the link between the curriculum and education 
  • evaluate the existing curriculum and develop intervention to improve the teaching and learning.
