Course Unit Description

This course is intended to present the students with the basic knowledge needed for professional web publishing and web-application development. This course will also introduce current advanced technologies used for web-application development such as web services, protocols for object sharing, web mining, recommendation systems, etc. The course will progressively introduce the students to: Publishing web content; Building web-based applications; Developing web services; and the use of advanced topics for designing intelligent web-based systems.

Course Objectives
To equip students with knowledge and skills about:

  • History and development of the World Wide Web and associated technologies
  • The client-server architecture of the World Wide Web and its communication protocol HTTP/HTTPS
  • Formats and languages used in modern web development: HTML, XHTML, CSS, Javascript, Node.js
  • Designing and building interactive web applications that suite particular business needs
  • Build smart and environments by integrating web applications with devices and hardware operating in different parts of the environment

Learning Outcomes
After successfully completing this course, students will be able to:

  • Describe the similarities and differences between the Internet and the World Wide Web in perspective with their associated histories
  • Describe the architecture underlying a web browser; a fundamental application for presenting web content;
  • Describe the different protocols that support the worldwide web; HTTP, IP/TCP, ARP, etc.
  • Analyze and design Web-based applications to meet certain business needs; Websites, Information Systems, Responsive web development, and Mobile web applications
  • Implement Web-based applications using HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Ajax technologies; 
  • Implement Web-based applications using MySQL DBMS and PHP server-side scripting language
  • Implement Web-based information systems by using Web services: WSDL, SOAP, REST, and SOA
  • Implement Web-based smart environments integrating various hardware and devices; Sensors, Actuators, Raspberry Pi, Node.js
  • Integrate other protocols to the Web; Bluetooth, MQTT, and CoAP
  • Explore emerging technologies in Web applications development; Responsive Web Apps, Progressive Web Apps, Javascript Frameworks, CMS, Ecommerce frameworks, Data storage, Social Networks
